Why Lubrication Is Important?

Importance of Lubrication

Proper lubrication ensures smooth machine operation and is essential for machine health and efficiency. Industrial lubricants are primarily made from a base oil, which can be mineral-based, synthetic, or vegetable-based, with additives to enhance performance. Grease is created by combining a base oil with a thickening agent.

The main purpose of lubrication is to reduce friction by creating a protective layer between surfaces. Without it, friction causes wear, heat, and contamination, leading to machine damage and failure. Lubrication also:

  • Controls heat: Absorbs and transfers heat, reducing the risk of overheating.
  • Prevents contamination: Seals components and removes contaminants from the system.
  • Protects against corrosion: Forms a barrier against chemical attacks like rust.
  • Transfers energy: Hydraulic oils transmit energy in hydraulic systems.

Types of Lubrication

Lubricants use one of three base oils:

  • Mineral oils: Derived from crude oil and used in most applications. They include straight and branched paraffins, naphthenes, and aromatics.
  • Synthetic oils: Man-made oils offering better stability and resistance but at a higher cost.
  • Vegetable oils: Rarely used industrially due to poor performance at low temperatures.

Synthetic oils are preferred in high-demand applications for their thermal resistance and durability.
